Mr. Weavil serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Solstas Lab Partners. An industry veteran with nearly four decades of clinical laboratory experience, Mr. Weavil brings an incredible amount of equity to the company. From 1982 to 1995, he served in a variety of capacities at Roche Biomedical Laboratories ('RBL'), and later as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 1989 to April 1995. From 1988 to 1989, Mr. Weavil was Regional Senior Vice President-Mid-Atlantic of RBL. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of RBL from 1982 to 1988. He served as Executive Vice President of Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings ("LabCorp") from April 1995 to December 1996. From September 1995 to 1997, Mr. Weavil served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of LabCorp. He served as the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Unilab Corporation from January 20, 1997 to November 23, 1999. He is a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Weavil earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Dr. Michael Hanbury has over 30 years of professional clinical and corporate management experience in clinical laboratory and in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) sectors. His broad career includes successful tenures in scientific research, direct patient care in nationally renowned academic medical centers and operations management in public and private clinical laboratories. His experience also includes concept-to-market design, development, engineering and compliance, as well as clinical trial and regulatory affairs management for IVD manufacturing companies. Previously, he was director of U.S. operations for an international IVD company and oversaw management of regulatory affairs for Roche Molecular Systems, where his efforts were instrumental in obtaining the first FDA clearances for some of the most widely-used commercial molecular diagnostic products on the market. He is a recipient of the 1987 AACC national Young Investigator Award. Previous to Solstas, he led the recapitalization and turnaround of DCL Medical Laboratories as President and CEO. In earlier roles, he oversaw significant laboratory growth as Chief Operating Officer of AD Pathlabs, EVP of Operations and Chief Scientific Officer for Unilab Corporation (operating 51 laboratories with revenue exceeding $750 million annually) and VP of Business Development at Westcliff Medical Laboratories. He has also served as Principal at HCC Consulting, which has provided operating and regulatory services to a number of nationally recognized clinical laboratories and IVD clients, including: Affymetrix, Clarient, Signature Genomics, Celera Diagnostics, Berkeley Heart Laboratory, CS-Keys, ImmuneWorks and Gold Standard Diagnostics. Obtaining an undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia in Biochemistry and Economics, Dr. Hanbury continued his graduate studies at the Medical College of Virginia, where he completed his clinical training. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Chemistry and Business Administration from ODU/Eastern Virginia Medical School and Central Michigan University, respectively.

Frank J. Beuerlein, M.D. is Board-certified in Anatomic, Clinical Pathology and in Cytopathology. He has a special interest in Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology as well as Computer Applications and Imaging in Pathology. Dr. Beuerlein is the Medical Director for Saint Mary’s Knoxville Laboratory and for Sweetwater Hospital Association laboratory, as well as the Regional Laboratory Director for Mercy Health Partners. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine in Memphis. He completed his pathology residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville following a rotating internship. Dr. Beuerlein has been listed on multiple occasions as Knoxville’s “Top Doctor.”

Prior to joining Solstas, Dr. Amberger served as the Laboratory Director of Aloha Laboratories, Inc. in Honolulu and a dermatology case photographer and presenter for the Hawaii Dermatology Society monthly Grande Round. Dr. Douglas J. Grider

Douglas J. Grider, MD is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology and dermatopathology. He completed his medical degree at the Edward F. Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD, followed by a pathology residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio, TX. Dr. Grider has completed three fellowships, including anatomic pathology during his last year of residency, and both a gastrointestinal pathology fellowship and dermatopathology fellowship under the auspices of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Dr. Grider currently serves as an Assistant Professor, Basic Science, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, teaching the latest in skin and gastrointestinal pathology to medical school students, residents and fellows. He is a 24 year veteran of the United States Air Force Medical Service, having served as chief of pathology at several large military medical centers, including Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and David Grant Medical Center in California. In addition, he is a sought after international speaker having given a myriad of lectures and presentations to both large and small audiences of pathologists, clinicians, and clinical scientists both here in the United States and Europe. He is the author of several articles in peer reviewed journals. His main interests in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology include inflammatory bowel disease, especially unusual presentations and anatomic locations for Crohn and inflammatory bowel disease, syndromic gastrointestinal polyposes, hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes and skin manifestations of gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Grider is currently the director of gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology, Carilion Clinic, Solstas Laboratory Partners and Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine, all located in Roanoke Va.

Valerie Fields, M.D. serves as Medical Director of Cytology for Solstas Lab Partners and is based in Greensboro, N.C. Her subsequent fellowship in Cytopathology was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Janice Hessling, M.D., Ph.D. serves as the Corporate Medical Director for Solstas Lab Partners, overseeing the main Clinical Laboratory, the Molecular Laboratory, Flow Cytometry and the Anatomic Pathology Department located in Greensboro, N.C. Dr. Hessling is a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. She completed her residency training at Duke Medical Center, which included a fifth year in a Surgical Pathology Fellowship with an emphasis in Immunohistochemistry. Dr. Hessling is Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with subspecialty Board certification in Cytopathology. She also has extensive experience in Uropathology. Prior to medical school, Dr. Hessling received a Ph.D. at Duke University in Microbiology and Immunology, spending several years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Virology, Immunology, and Cancer Research, plus teaching graduate students and undergraduate students in Microbiology and Immunology.

William Konomos, M.D. is Board-certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. His particular interests include Gynecologic and Breast Pathology as well as Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation. Following an undergraduate degree from Duke University in Biomedical Engineering, he attended medical school at The Ohio State University and trained in Pathology at Indiana University Methodist Hospital. Dr. Konomos is currently Medical Director of the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center Laboratory as well as the Processing Facility Director for the Thompson Cancer Survival Center’s Stem Cell Transplant Program.

Dr. Zhaoli Lane

Director of Genitourinary Pathology

Dr. Lane graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed three years of residency at The Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Lane completed her Genitourinary Pathology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Epstein, an internationally recognized expert in Genitourinary Pathology (GU). The GU pathology training involved reading over 5000 cases. These cases were sent to Dr. Epstein from academic institutions, community practices, commercial laboratories and urology clinics from all over the world. Dr. Lane also assisted Dr. Epstein in extensive research in disease of the Prostate and Bladder which resulted in publication of five papers. Three papers on Bladder Disease were published in the American Journal of Surgical Pathology and two papers on Prostate Disease were published in The Journal of Urology and Human Pathology. Dr. Lane was the lead GU Pathologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., under the direction of Dr. Mani Menon, the director of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. Dr. Lane joined Select Diagnostics, a clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory headquartered in Greensboro, N.C., where she worked closely with Alliance Urology Specialists, as well as many other Urology clients. Dr. Lane joined Solstas Lab Partners® in 2011.

Dr. Zach Lewis

Zach Lewis, M.D. is Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and has subspecialty training and Board certification in Hematopathology. Dr. Lewis graduated from Mercer University with a degree in Environmental Science and Mercer University School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Residency and Fellowship training followed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Lewis was on the faculty for the Wake Forest University School of Medicine for one year and has special interest in Flow Cytometry.

Dr. Mammarappallil is Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology.

Dr. Christopher D. McKinney

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Gynecologic Pathology

Dr. McKinney is a native of western North Carolina and grew up in Spruce Pine. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, focusing on clinical laboratory science. After spending two years learning more about clinical laboratories as a technologist in the clinical chemistry laboratory at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. He entered medical school and earned his medical degree with Honors in 1989 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a medical student, Dr. McKinney was awarded a prestigious Howard Holderness research fellowship, focusing on gene expression with a thesis entitled: “Regulation of Expression from Specific Viral Gene Promoters in Methotrexate Resistant Cell Lines”. After medical school, Dr. McKinney completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Virginia, serving as Chief Resident in Anatomic Pathology and completed a 5th year fellowship focusing on surgical pathology and cytopathology, with an emphasis on fine needle aspiration cytology. As a resident, Dr. McKinney pursued additional interests in hematopathogy and flow cytometry, among others, and was the lead author of numerous articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the American Journal of Surgical Pathology. As a practicing pathologist in the Northeast Tennessee, Dr. McKinney developed expertise in application of computer-assisted image analysis for quantitative assessment of protein expression in various types of cancer. This type of analysis is being used increasingly to assist in determining a cancer patient’s prognosis and to assist in selection of appropriate therapy. Dr. McKinney’s name (and voice) has been familiar to pathologists nationally, having served five years as a reviewer for Practical Reviews in Pathology, a nationally distributed audio and electronic journal review service for practicing pathologists. After practicing with Wellmont Health System and Highlands Pathology Consultants in Northeast Tennessee area for nine years, the lure of returning home to North Carolina closer to family and friends, finally persuaded Dr. McKinney and his family to relocate to the Wilmington area. When he is not busy practicing pathology, Dr. McKinney enjoys spending time with his wife, Linda, who is originally from Durham, NC, and their two children, Emily and Douglas. He and Linda are very actively involved in the academic and athletic pursuits of their children. Their daughter Emily is a competitive gymnast and Douglas enjoys soccer, gymnastics and golf. Dr. McKinney has a passion for all types of athletics and particularly enjoys golf and basketball (big UNC fan), and enjoys attending UNC sporting events whenever possible.

Dr. Linda McWey-Price

Linda McWey-Price, M.D. is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology with qualification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology. She received her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia and the Medical College of Virginia. She completed a Fellowship in Cytopathology and Surgical Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. McWey-Price has a special interest in women’s healthcare that includes Gynecologic Pathology. She also specializes in interpretation of Fine Needle Aspiration biopsies of deep lesions performed under CT guidance.

Dr. Brian K. Newman

Brian K. Newman, M.D. is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology with qualification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology. He received his medical degree at the University of Virginia, followed by a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at that same institution. He completed a one-year Cytology fellowship at the George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Newman is Assistant Medical Director of the Histology Laboratory. Dr. Newman has a special interest in Gynecologic Pap tests and liquid-based preparation.

Dr. Babatunde Olatidoye

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology

Dr. Olatidoye earned his medical degree from The University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. Prior to obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Olatidoye earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Chemistry from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He also has a diploma in Medical Technology from St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology in Windsor, Ontario Canada. After medical School, Dr. Olatidoye (O-la-ti-do-ya) completed his residency training at The University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill and subsequently completed fellowships in surgical pathology and Cytopathology at the same institution. He has held academic appointments at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center and The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville where he served as an Assistant Professor of Pathology. Dr. Olatidoye is a fellow of The College of American Pathologists. When Dr. Olatidoye has time away from the laboratory, he enjoys playing soccer, traveling and photography. He is married to Dr. Constance M. Olatidoye, a Wilmington Psychiatrist. Their home is always busy as they are proud parents of two growing boys, Olufemi and Olajide. Their favorite thing about living and working in Wilmington is the pleasant year round temperature and the beach. Dr. Olatidoye grew up in Nigeria, West Africa.

Richard Sances, M.D. is a graduate of the University Of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Va. He completed his Pediatric Residency training in Lexington, K.Y. at the University of Kentucky. After two years of private practice pediatrics, he completed a Pathology residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The following year he completed a Pediatric Pathology Fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Board-certified in Pediatrics, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and also Pediatric Pathology.

Dr. Brian C. Shiro

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, Oral Pathology

Dr. Shiro grew up in Waterville, Maine. He graduated from Williams College in 1980 and earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1985. He spent one year, 1983, completing a fellowship in pathology at U.V.M. While at Williams College, Dr. Shiro coached the women’s hockey team and lettered in golf. He was, otherwise, a typical pre-medical student who spent all of his time in the library (re-named Shiro Memorial Library by his classmates). His senior honors thesis in biology was entitled “The Maturation-Delaying Effects of the Mature Female Mouse’s (Mus Muculus) Urine After Adrenalectomy and Hormone Replacement Therapy.” After medical school, Dr. Shiro migrated south and landed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for his residency and fellowship training; developing expertise in gastrointestinal, oral and immunohistochemical pathology. Wilmington has provided numerous opportunities to continue these interests. He acknowledges that the energy and high quality of the physicians of Wilmington provides an incentive to continuously improve pathology services. While studying and practicing in North Carolina he fell in love with the state and with a lovely, red-headed Tar Heel alum, Donna Worthington. They have been married for over 15 years and are blessed with son Zachary, daughter Alexis and two great dogs - Max and Keebler. The Shiro family loves the great North Carolina weather, the people and the restaurants of Wilmington. When not working, Dr. Shiro enjoys spending time with his family, investing, reading, playing hockey, golfing, fitness training and computer games.

Dr. Stephen Swanger

Stephen J. Swanger, M.D. serves as the Medical Director for Solstas Lab Partners' Anatomic Pathology Laboratory and Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center Laboratory. He received his medical degree at East Carolina University Medical School and completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Swanger is Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Cytopathology. His Fellowships in Cytopathology and Hematopathology were completed at Emory University Hospital. He has a special interest in Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology as well as Computer Applications and Imaging in Pathology.

C. Timothy Via, M.D. is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology with qualification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Via obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and following an Internship in Internal Medicine, completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Via is Assistant Medical Director for the Clinical Chemistry Laboratories and the rapid-response laboratory at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Dr. Via has special interests in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Testing for Drug Abuse, Gynecologic Pathology and Gastrointestinal Pathology.

Dr. Wirthwein is Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Vandana Kumar, M.B.B.S. is a graduate of J.J.M. Medical College located in Davangere, India. She completed her residency in pathology in Chicago at the Metropolitan Group Hospital Residency program, including a PGY5 in pathology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr Kumar also completed two fellowships while at the University of Kentucky Medical center – one in Surgical Pathology and the other in Cytopathology. Current board certifications include combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology. She is the current medical director of the Jellico Community Hospital laboratory.
